Place Name
The name of Charleston originated with Charles Haskell, an early resident, who is believed to have settled on a claim in 1853 at the mouth of South Slough.
Local Landmarks
Three of Oregon’s grandest State Parks are clustered within six miles south of Charleston: Shore Acres, Sunset Bay, and Cape Arago.
Shore Acres State Park was once an opulent estate famed for its magnificent botanical gardens, with flowering trees, shrubs and plants brought from many parts of the world. The luxurious garden now belongs to the state.
